The power of Christian Science and divine Love is omnipotent. It is indeed adequate to unclasp the hold and to destroy disease, sin, and death. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy

What is Christian Science?

Some Common Confusions

Christian Science is sometimes confused with Scientology, New Age practices, faith healing, and Eastern religions. It has also been called un-Christian or labeled a cult.

Actually, Christian Science is none of the above.

The inspiration it offers runs deeper than positive thinking.
    It is deeply Christian.
Christian Science teaches that it’s never God's will for anyone to suffer, be sick, or die.
Instead, it shows how God is entirely good, and therefore His will for each of us is only health and life.

To see how Christian Scientists relate to other faiths and backgrounds, this link will take you to the ecumenical and interfaith dialogue community on

Christian Science is Christian.

Its foundation is the Bible - the spiritual interpretation of the Old Testament, and the teachings of our Master, Christ Jesus, who promised, “He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also...” (John 14:12).

Mary Baker Eddy, a lifetime student of the Bible, experienced a healing of fatal injuries, resulting from a fall, by grasping the eternal nature of Jesus' promise.
In the textbook of Christian Science - Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, she writes of his healing work, “…these mighty works are not supernatural, but supremely natural...” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p.xi:14)

"Question. — Have Christian Scientists any religious creed?
Answer. — They have not, if by that term is meant doctrinal beliefs. The following is a brief exposition of the important points, or religious tenets, of Christian Science: —  "

From Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,
Mary Baker Eddy

Tenets of Christian Science

    1. As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life.

    2. We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God's image and likeness.

    3. We acknowledge God's forgiveness of sin in the destruction of sin and the spiritual understanding that casts out evil as unreal. But the belief in sin is punished so long as the belief lasts.

    4. We acknowledge Jesus' atonement as the evidence of divine, efficacious Love, unfolding man's unity with God through Christ Jesus the Way-shower; and we acknowledge that man is saved through Christ, through Truth, Life, and Love as demonstrated by the Galilean Prophet in healing the sick and overcoming sin and death.

    5. We acknowledge that the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection served to uplift faith to understand eternal Life, even the allness of Soul, Spirit, and the nothingness of matter.

    6. And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure.

"Our Father which art in heaven,"

"Our Father-Mother God, all-harmonious,"

"Hallowed be Thy name."

"Adorable One."

"Thy kingdom come."

"Thy kingdom is come; Thou art ever-present."

"Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven."

"Enable us to know,--as in heaven, so on earth,--God is omnipotent, supreme."

"Give us this day our daily bread;"

"Give us grace for to-day; feed the famished affections;"

"And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors."

"And Love is reflected in love;"

"And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil;"

"And God leadeth us not into temptation, but delivereth us from sin, disease, and death."

"For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever."

"For God is infinite, all-power, all Life, Truth, Love, over all, and All."

About Our Building

Our wonderful church building was designed in 1910 by architect Bernard Maybeck (1862-1957). The American Institute of Architecture named it one of the three finest uniquely American churches in the United States. It was listed a National Historic Landmark in 1977.

Bernard Maybeck is acknowledged as one of America's great architects. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the American Institute of Architects in 1951. He designed 150-160 projects that were built, of which 100 are still standing.
Most of his work was in the Bay Area and especially in Berkeley, although his largest commission was the design of Principia College in Elsa, Illinois.

The two buildings which are considered his masterpieces are First Church of Christ, Scientist, Berkeley and the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco (1915)

What is Christian Science?

From the textbook for the study of Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by
Mary Baker Eddy

page 463

"There is a law of God applicable to healing, and it is a spiritual law instead of material."

page 271

"Christ’s Christianity is the chain of scientific being reappearing in all ages, maintaining its obvious correspondence with the Scriptures and uniting all periods in the design of God."

page 342

"If Christianity is not scientific, and Science is not of God, then there is no invariable law, and truth becomes an accident."

page 341

"Sneers at the application of the word Science to Christianity cannot prevent that from being scientific which is based on divine Principle, demonstrated according to a divine given rule, and subjected to proof."

Healing in Christian Science

"Christian marvels (and marvel is the simple meaning of the Greek word rendered miracle in the New Testament) will be misunderstood and misused by many, until the glorious Principle of these marvels is gained."

For more than 130 years, over 80,000 healings through Christian Science have been verified and published by The Christian Science Journal, Christian Science Sentinel, and The Herald of Christian Science
